On February 1, 2019, Nora Phillips, a lawyer at the forefront of providing legal services to asylum seekers and deportees in Tijuana, was detained and deported by Mexican authorities for reasons that the Mexican government has yet to specify. At 11:30AM, when the call went out to immigration attorneys in Los Angeles that Nora was arriving at the airport after a nine-hour detention, SGG lawyer Helen A. Sklar went to the airport to greet Nora and be of service in the event Nora encountered legal problems during inspection by U.S. Customs officers. Helen and Nora are both members of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Immigration Section; Helen serves as Chair of the Executive Committee of the Immigration Section.
