On October 8, 2017, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey announced that effective immediately non-immigrant visa services are suspended indefinitely at all U.S. diplomatic facilities in Turkey. This includes the embassy in Ankara and consulates in Istanbul and Adana. The suspension of services is not a visa ban on Turkish citizens, but rather a suspension of new non-immigrant visa applications. Individuals with a valid visa may continue to travel to the United States. Individuals that wish to apply for a new visa may do so at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate outside of Turkey.
The U.S. Embassy has stated that the reason for the suspension of non-immigrant visa services is to minimize the number of visitors to its facilities while they assess the commitment of the Government of Turkey to the security of U.S. diplomatic facilities and personnel. The decision was triggered by the arrest of a Turkish staff member of the U.S. diplomatic mission by Turkish authorities. The Turkish government has reciprocated the U.S. action, announcing that all non-immigrant visa services have been suspended at all Turkish diplomatic facilities in the U.S.
